Honda Del Sol - Custom Driver's Vent Pod Gauge Mount

Today I wanted to talk about how I created my own Gauge pod mount in the Driver side Factory AC vent on my 95' Honda Del Sol. I had seen some pictures of this done but not a whole lot of people are talking about how they did it so I wanted to show some of my process.

I also realize that the Banks gauge I installed in my vehicle will apply to about 0.001% of you guys but any same/similar sized gauge would hold true to this whole process. I started by figuring out how to get the A/C vent ball out of the hole it is in, which FYI is kind of a P.I.T.A. , I really had to apply some pressure to the assembly to get the ball to release which made me a little nervous.. obviously parts like these are not abundant for these cars anymore, so please be cautious when you go to do this. All of that old plastic is fragile now and ready to explode into a million little plastic pieces. A trim removal tool worked really well for this as the ball has to circle pins that hold it in place. You can see how it holds itself into the housing in all of my removed pictures.

Next, I measured the O.D of the gauge part that would be sitting in the vent slot - keep in mind, on this gauge it is not the same O.D as the face, and I wanted the face to sit on the ridge around the sides so this was important. I took this measurement and marked out the size on the AC vent assembly and broke out my Dremel! A small 1in cut off wheel attachment first to build a hole out of the center of the vent, then I used a tiny drum sander attachment to clearance out the rest of the hole to the right size. Take your time doing this part!

I made the AC vent assembly hole barely big enough so that it was a pressure fit. This holds the gauge in very well without having to secure the gauge to the pod in any way. I would imagine you could do something else to secure the gauge into the pod, but I didn't feel it was necessary, and I thought I might experience clearance issues on the backside if I did. Before I reinstalled the AC vent and gauge , I drilled a passthrough hole for the wiring to drop down near the fuse panel. My Banks gauge stole its Power, Ground, and Data from the DLC connector, however I included some details on how I would use the Factory Fuse box to steal gauge power, illumination, where to ground, and where to passthrough your sensor lead if that's what you're doing.

Cheers everyone and Happy Creating!
